The Gypset + Zoi Zen retreat is 6 days of decadent well being in Careyes, Mexico. The luxury retreat is a combination of fitness and conceptual fun. Daily yoga, farm/ocean-to-table cuisine, and deep relaxation mixed with a heavy dose of style from castle dance parties, desert island hopping, and dinners amongst Careyes’ exotic architecture.
The retreat is hosted by Julia Chaplin, the creator of the Gypset book series and lifestyle brand, and Christina Hinds, a former Olympic Greek volleyball champion and celebrity trainer. Christina, who lives in Malibu, and Julia, in New York City, met on the inspiring shores of Careyes last year. Over margaritas and long beach walks they dreamed of a new type of wellness retreat in which yoga, nutrition, and dancing into the night are held as equally beneficial to the spirit.
Careyes, located on the pristine Pacific coastline of Mexico between Manzanillo and Puerto Vallarta, was the perfect location for such an experience. It’s an exclusive bohemian luxe resort with a handful of surrealist castles, private beaches, and a general commitment to conceptual leisure. Founded in the 1960’s by Italian artist and financier Gianfranco Brignone for his eccentric jet-set friends, the castles (as the fantastical villas are called) exude both a reverence to nature and extravagance with cliffs instead of walls, enormous palm thatched roofs, and infinity pool moats. There are giant sculptures including La Copa, a group sized human bowl on a cliff overlooking the Pacific Ocean. Across a suspended footbridge dangling high above the bay is a small island with a mediation platform. The area surrounding Careyes is completely undeveloped with thousands of acres of nature preserves. No high-rises, chain stores and few rules—just wild, elegant nature.
The Retreat: Daily yoga, ocean swims, island hopping by boat, sunset sound baths in the Copa, gourmet regional cuisine, artisanal margaritas, super-chic villa accommodations, castle dance party, desert isle meditation, private beaches, massage, Chinese New Year party, inspiration, and most of all, fantasy. Tranquillo o fiesta.
Lodging: Guests stay in grand open-air villas with sweeping living and dining areas and infinity pools. They are fully staffed with a butler and gourmet cooks. There are five suites per villa each with en suite bathrooms and soaking tubs with views of the Pacific. There’s air conditioning, wifi, and daily maid service. The villas are a few minutes walk to the beach and the Playa Rosa restaurant.
Meals: Breakfast, lunch, and dinner will be prepared daily with the freshest local ingredients. In addition, the kitchen staff will slice up a papaya, squeeze fresh orange juice or whip up a mid-day snack should you desire. Several dinner parties have been planned including one hosted by Filippo Brignone at his home, Tigre Del Mar, a castle with a grotto and a turret and a stargazing deck. Chinese New Year’s will be held at the Playa Rosa restaurant with the Careyes community and a picnic at Paraiso beach.
